Students will turn in their lab final 3/6/09. This is worth 2 grades and students are expected to turn this lab in on time. They have received several days to collect data and calculate their results, graph the data, answer lab questions and write a conclusion. Since this is a final I have made it very clear that their very best effort is expected and they are to use class time wisely.

Progress reports for everyone

Students in periods A,B,D and E received progress reports today. My G period will receive their PR's tomorrow. The standard rule is that anyone with below a 70% average must get the PR signed by a guardian and return it to school.
Algebra test are over and NECAP begins tomorrow.
Students started a full formal lab yesterday and we will finish next week due to the testing. We will continue to perform lab activities, quizzes, test and assignments right up to the end of the year.
And the DC trip starts next Thursday.

Students began to collect data for the old drop the ball and calculate velocity and acceleration lab today.
Tomorrow we will finish data collection on the ball drop and wrap up this lab. This lab will be graded on the NEW lab rubric.
Also tomorrow they are to turn in their Stop on a Dime data and graph. Graphing rubrics and data table rubrics should be followed for all labs.

Students practiced working as teams to gather data on their abilities to react quickly. They all have their own data and their partners data as well. They are to graph this data so they can compare each others reaction time.

The Inclined to Roll lab is due tomorrow, today we went over the graph for the lab and students had time to review their data and ask question. Several children finished the lab in class and the most work the majority of the children need to finish would have been their conclusion.

Save the Bay Friday trip

Everyone survived the field trip and most admitted that they had a good time. Students completed three worksheets that myself and Mrs. Morse collected.
On Monday the Save the Bay staff has asked our group to participate in a educational video and our Monday students have taken home waivers for parents to sign so that the video team may tape the children in action performing the activities. There is a possibility that our group could end up on national TV presentation.

Today students performed a Wave Tank lab and this lab report is due next Wednesday. There is a wave worksheet that goes along with todays lab this worksheet is due on Tuesday.

Sound wave lab activity

Students performed an activity about sound waves. One of MY students your children had a wow moment and commented that now they know what an amplifier is and why it works. These are the moments I teach for.
We will finish this lab tomorrow and there was no HW tonight. I the children do not finish the lab questions in class they will have these for HW tomorrow.
The Save the Bay permission slips are due tomorrow.
The section 1 and 2 review questions from the Waves and Sound reading will be late tomorrow and return of the text books drops to 80 points tomorrow as well.
PR's were due back today. I only sent out PR's for under 70% grades.

I gave student with below 70% averages progress reports (PR's) today. I also posted the grades for all students in the classroom for students to check their grades and refresh their memories about the assignments that are due. This is the second time this trimester that students with low averages have received the PR's
The unit test was given today and tomorrow students will perform an activity in the lab on sound waves.
Home work tonight was for students to finish the second section review from the Waves and Sound reading. Section 1 review was due today. Section 2 is due tomorrow.

Student returned from vacation to a review for the Atoms and Molecules test review
The test is Wednesday and the Chemical Interactions text books are due back the day of the test
Save the Bay permission slips were sent home today and due back Friday.
Student have received their new text books, Motion and Forces with a reading packet on wave characteristics. We have started to investigate the physical components of mechanical waves and are preparing to preform a wave activity to prepare for the Save the Bay field trip May 1st and 4th.
If you wish to be a chaperone on this field trip, contact the school office before friday since all chaperones now need a background check.

Wrapping up the Atoms and Molecules unit

We will begin to wrap up the atoms and molecules unit 4/7 and a unit test will be assigned after vacation no sooner than the Wednesday after the break.
I will be checking the students' portfolio at least 10 times over the 3rd trimester each check will be 10 points and as I told students these will be like fire drills and you must be ready.
I have also started the what and why portfolio check. Students usually shine with these, just like the digital portfolios at PHS the student chooses their best work to discuss and describe the connection to the GLE's .

Student element posters have been graded and I have started hanging them in the common room to make a giant periodic poster. Since there a many blank spaces on this table students have been offered the opportunity to sign up and create a poster to fill one of the empty spaces. One everyone from all 5 classes has had a chance to sign up for one of the blank spaces students who wish to create a second poster may sign up for a second element. This is an extra credit lab grade and I have informed students that I will not accept any poster that does not meet the highest standard on the rubric.

We have completed the Bag of Fun lab and I collected these today, students were given class time to complete the entire lab so I accepted no excuses. As always they could come to late night for help and not lose late points.

We will wrap up discussion tomorrow and the lab report will be due Tuesday. Poster Project progresses

Students will finish research in the classroom tomorrow and they have been directed to use the web site Yogi's Behemoth Periodic Table for information about their elements that they may not have found in the books. All students will receive the materials tomorrow to begin their posters. Monday will be the last classroom day to work on the posters and the due date will be Wednesday. I hope to use the posters to create a large periodic table in the Blue Team Common Room for display.

Element Poster Project

Students have started the Element Poster Project. They have been assigned 2 elements to research, a vocabulary list, and a research worksheet. Mrs Simoneau has provided research books from the library for students to use with the resource books in the classroom. There is a science link to a periodic table on this blog for students to use for their web source. There is a vocabulary list with the definitions on the classroom forms section on this blog as well.

Graphing Rubric and Email address

The Rubric for all graphs in my class is as follows;
1. students will use the whole page of the graph paper
2. all graphs have a title that reflects the data being compared
3. the data is graphed on the correct axis, independent and dependent.
4. both axis has been labeled and the correct units are in place
5. the graph is extremely neat. use of a ruler and best penmanship

Research project up date

2/5/09 Due to our Save the Bay field trip there was no research done in class today. Tomorrow is the last class day that will be devoted to research and the books go back to the library. Student will then be allowed to search the internet for sources now that they have some vocabulary to search with. The research paper is due on 2/13/09.
2/4/09 Due Friday 13. February. Students must have 4 sources, at least 3 book and 1 internet, this is the minimum.
One full page MLA format is 1" margins and #12 times new roman font and the works cited page. Again this is the minimum.
2/3/09 Student began the research project February 2, on Global Warming. Students have been instructed to choose a topic that addresses what causes global warming and what transfer of energy is involved. This report will be due next week weather pending. The report will only be one full page, MLA format with a works cited page for resources. Grading rubric has been passed out to all students. Mr. Aellig and I are both working on the same project.

ALL students have received a PR, progress report, today with directions that all PR's must be taken home, signed and returned to school. This means A+'s to F's.

HW, homework, tonight is a reading for the global warming project, students have been instructed to read this article and answer 5 questions in complete sentences. The questions are open ended to give students the opportunity to explore the reading for the information that catches their mind's eye. The 5 questions are; who, what, why, when and where.

We are coming up on a portfolio test/check, 25% of this grade will be based on the student coming to class prepared and their notebook in order. This will be posted on the front board and students will not receive any other warning for this test/check. THEY MUST be ready.

Notes continued

We continued vocabulary notes today on the new unit and students have been reminded that tomorrow is the big Density test. For todays notes see class forms Prentice Hall notes.

This week I hope to make it to that appointment I've been snowed out of 3 times and this will be the last week I will have my late night on Thursday. If is does not snow I will get back to my usual Wednesday late nights next week.

Students have been reminded that if they stay after for help I do not subtract late points.

Progress reports are scheduled to go out next week, I am not sure if this is to all students or only to students with averages below 70%. I've been asking around to find out. I will post my findings as soon as I know for sure.

Our Next Project

Students started to familerize themselves with the vocabulary they will need for our next project.

I have a student teacher, Mr. Aellig, who will be working with me on this project. Mr. Aellig will begin Jan 20th and will continue for 7 weeks.

This coming week I will again have my late night scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

The Density Test is scheduled for this coming Tuesday.

Last Density Lab

We finished collecting data for the last density lab 1/6 and the lab is due Friday 1/9. I will finish up this unit with a test for density which I plan for Tuesday 1/13, I will review for the test on Friday.

Students will begin to work on the unit for atoms and molecules, all the students have been assigned a text book for this material and have been instructed to keep this book at home and we will use the set in the classroom during the day.

I posted the students grades in the classroom so that all students know what their average is and what they have completed or what they have not turned in.

Happy New Year, I hope everyone had a enjoyable and restful vacation.

We started the new year with rewriting the Fluff lab report. As a class we went over the lab step by step and all students were instructed to rewrite their lab reports for a better grade. Even students who did not write a lab were given one last chance to earn some grade. Students have until the end of the week to rewrite this lab, then the grade will be permanent.

Tomorrow, 1/6, students finish collecting data for the Liquid Density Lab and the lab report is due Friday 1/9. Students have been reminded that any portion of the lab they do not complete will result in an incomplete F. All students have received a copy of the lab report rubric and are expected to follow this rubric to accomplish a passing grade. This rubric can be found under Classroom forms on this sight.

MMS Grade System

I apologize, I thought all our parents and students were aware of the new grade system that the school has put into use. It is the understanding that during 2nd trimester parents and student will be able to access grades on line. The school has already sent home progress reports through this system and the current report cards that students received were generated with the MMS system.

During 1st trimester students were sent home with new emergency forms that were designed to provide information to set up the new system. I will post new updates on this progress as I learn more.

My main focus is to post my grades so they are available for you.

Some students have been absent for some assignments and have blanks, these assignments must be made up as soon as possible or the grade will become a permanent zero. Their first reading assignment will be to read pages 8 to 28. there will be a worksheet for pages 8-11 and the chapter test on measurements, mass, volume and density will be based on class notes and text material.

Today in class you were to measure volume of a variety of items using several different lab devices. You were to construct a data table using the data table rubric and the finished data table is due Wednesday Dec. 3rd.

The next Pre-lab Quizzes

Once you have the lab instruction I will expect you to read ALL the lab instructions and prepare for the pre-lab quiz. As you have seen from the first pre-lab quiz you must read the entire lab sheet. You must know what the lab is about, why we are doing this lab (standards) what materials we must use and the procedures.

Another thing you should have learned from the last pre-lab is that reading the lab sheet once quickly is not enough to answer the pre-lab questions and receive a passing grade. Here I go again, nag, nag, nag you must read en depth and more than once to get a good handle on the materials.

Enjoy your holiday. Starting Monday we begin 2 big labs on density. Have your lab report rubrics and your data table rubric ready to use. Remember the worksheets on Reading Different Scales, I will expect very precise readings on all lab equipment. You will also have to calculate the density of many unknown materials and be able to identify each material by it's density. Don't forget that density is a property of matter.
